FILM 171B Immersive Sound Design

Introduces students to the creative and technical practices of spatial audio. Through deep listening exercises, hands-on labs, and project-based work, the course explores how sound shapes perception, meaning, and experience across cinematic and virtual environments. Students learn foundational principles of immersive audio including spatialization, object-based mixing, and Dolby Atmos, while developing practical skills in field recording, sound design, DAW editing, and composing to picture.

Requirements

Prerequisite(s): FILM 171A. Interested students who do not meet prerequisites can contact instructor to discuss potential enrollment via permission code. For consideration, student must have previous audio experience and sound recording samples.
