ASTR 125 Machining for Physics and Astronomy Instrumentation

Students work with a professional machinist to learn the fundamentals of metal machining in the context of building scientific instruments. The class takes place at the University of California Observatories Machine Shop, where students receive group instruction on machining and then work independently to machine parts, including parts that they will use in their own physics and astronomy research. Enrollment is by instructor permission and is for students who are doing experimental physics and astronomy research at UCSC over the summer.
