How to Declare the Chemistry Minor

Students electing a chemistry minor may not use the online petition to declare. The steps to pursue a chemistry minor are as follows:

  1. Create a major academic plan and have it signed by the UC Santa Cruz major advisor.
  2. Make an appointment with the chemistry minor advisor and send the link for the signed major academic plan to chemistryadvising@ucsc.edu.
  3. The chemistry minor advisor will review the major academic plan and will add the chemistry minor courses to the academic plan, if it is viable to do so per double credit counting, enrollment limitations, and time-to-degree guidelines.
  4. The chemistry minor advisor will discuss the chemistry minor plan with the student during their scheduled appointment.
  5. Once approved as a viable major/minor plan by both the major/department advisor and the Chemistry minor advisor, the Chemistry minor advisor will sign the academic planning form and they will process the minor declaration.

Note: Students need to declare a major before they can declare a minor. Students should prioritize major coursework over minor coursework when necessary.

Letter Grade Policy

All courses used to satisfy degree requirements in the chemistry minor must be taken for a letter grade. Additionally, letter grades of C or higher must be attained in all courses to meet major and minor requirements for graduation.

Double Major/Minor Restrictions

A student cannot double major/minor in chemistry and any other major/minor offered by the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department.

Students who plan to do advanced work in biochemistry and molecular biology should take the biochemistry and molecular biology (BIOC) 100ABC series. Completing the series will fulfill the requirement of CHEM 103 (Biochemistry) plus fulfill one elective. Students who have finished CHEM 103 can, with instructor permission, enroll in BIOC 100C without taking BIOC 100A and BIOC 100B. In this case, BIOC 100C may be used as an elective.
